About the Show

Reed All About It offers a unique presentation to primary schools which introduces children to many strange and exotic sounding instruments that they will never have had the opportunity of hearing before.

All the instruments we will demonstrate have one thing in common-they are either made entirely of bamboo or the sound piece is made from bamboo.

The children will hear the haunting sound of the Turkish Duduk, the brilliant sound of the Chinese Shawm and the comic sound of the Indian Snake Charming Been as well as the more familiar sounds of the Oboe and Cor Anglais.

The instruments will be played in a style appropriate to their country of origin so giving the children the benefit of hearing a broad range of musical styles.

As the children experience the thrill of hearing these instruments in a live performance, we will encourage them to watch and listen carefully throughout and to think about how each instrument makes its sound. In some instances they will be shown a simple home-made alternative that they can try out for themselves to help them to understand the scientific principles involved.

Our presentation will help your school to fulfil the requirements set down in the national curriculum as we will cover several aspects of the music curriculum during the show.

A key element of Reed All About It is to reinforce the idea that music can be fun and to encourage children in their musical studies. Our presentation has been carefully designed to be entertaining, enjoyable and informative. There will be plenty of opportunities for the children to join in with percussion instruments and to ask and answer questions.
